Mush is when my brain begins a few hundred ideas and moves so quickly through them I can not investigate them all.

Some of the items lately are these:

In reading blogs and lists on the compact, it seems to me a lack of contentment is showcased. One blog I read about it doesn't feel bad, but the yahoo group definitely made me feel alien for having what I want and wanting what I have. Contentment is a huge part of a Christian's life, with out it life feels hollow. I am still thinking of compacting, though I already do much of what they do (aside from dumpster diving for things or dinner... ick) the difference is, I am content not looking for ways to acquire more stuff. I have no needs really, stuff wise.

My next niggling thought is on race relations. I am reading a double biography of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver.
George W. Carver is one of my favorite historical figures. He got me interested in gardening to meet my families needs. He got me interested in sewing and knitting too. Though I didn't begin learning much of these skills until adulthood, he was always in my mind as the beginning of them. In this book they are talking supposedly about his and B.T. Washington's faith. How they differed from the sentiments of “Negro” people of their time. It dawns on me, I never consider a persons race. I mean, if they are hard working, and Bible studying, I do not care what color they happen to be, I want them as friends and neighbors. Likewise if they are shiftless, whiny and demanding, I do not. I do not treat folks different because of their color, their gender or their religion. While I disagree with some of how B.T. Handled things, on one point I agree. Work hard, be respectable, trust worthy and people in general will accept you. Be pushy and demanding and people will resent your presence. I despise shiftless people who refuse to work because they know the gov will feed them. God says if a man will not work, neither should he eat. Our gov needs to take a memo.

The 3rd idea I am studying is the KJV. It is changing and not for the better. Newer KJVs have words changed from the old verse, and sometimes it changes the meaning of the word. I say this as a warning, if you believe the KJV to be THE only acceptable Bible, you need to be very careful. It is not the same as it was in 1611. I personally do not hold this belief. Though it does bother me, because as an English major, I like the old English now and then. If my KJV is going to read the same as my NIV, why have it?
For example, the word in the old KJV, Broided. It is not a word today. According to the scholars I talked to (fluent in old languages and things like Arabic, Hebrew and Latin) it is NOT synonymous with braided and is wrongly translated that way. Broided, like embroidered is a fancy thing. With loops and twirls. Embrodery is also called in olden times, fancy work, broided is fancy work in the hair. It is unneeded platting and design, think renaissance, Cinderella and such.

That brings me to item 4. Folks going over board on being “plain”. I have been looking at this for a while now. It dawned on me in my reading the other day what 1 Peter 3 really says. It does NOT say do not wear gold or braid you hair. It DOES say to not let those things over shadow your attitude and demeanor as a Christian woman. Why do I say this? Well for one it says “not with” it does not say DO NOT WEAR. And secondly, it also says “not with apparel”. Not fancy apparel, just simply apparel. I am certain the “not with” does not mean do not wear clothes. There is a difference between a fancy hair do, and copious gold chains and evening gowns and a simple serviceable braid, a simple gold wedding ring and a simple dress. God, ladies is in the details, the devil is in adding to them what God Himself does not.

These are just the top 4 of items running in my head. There are many more I may deal with later.

Helen, the compact is a group of folks world wide who are challenging themselves not to buy anything new for 1 year.
There is a yahoo group for it as well, I joined but after a week I left, the feeling of discontent was just too much for me to handle. I never evne posted to it.

The one compacter blog I read is this one:
http://thenonconsumeradvocate.wordpress.com/
I enjoy her ideas and agree with a lot of what she says.
