I think my beloved created a monster!
My beloved MJ has always encouraged me (read that as push, dragged and on occasion prodded) to buy new clothes. One part of my childhood lingers with me.
The wear it out part. I can not stand to replace things until I can no longer use them for anything. Clothes are my worst part. Next I suppose would be shoes.
However a couple weeks ago I took some of my pay and decided to go looking for dresses suitable to wear to town, for work or to church. I did not go looking at retail stores. Their offerings while perhaps moderate in price were still well above my budget. I had planned to go to goodwill. I ended up in town long before they opened so I sought out some yard sales. I found 2, and between them I supplied myself for probably 2 years in new to me dresses and skirt set and jumpers! All for the princely sum of $18!
Then, last week in honor of Mothers day my Beloved took me thrifting. I am in search of an Amplified Bible and an English Standard Bible. The thrifts yielded neither. (Though at 1 I did score a Christy, and Beloved found a cable he needed) We moved on to the next, there are three from one organization; they have much better prices than goodwill or salvation army. We were looking for a shirt for him. However I still needed a denim skirt to finish my wardrobe. Beloved said “no you need more than just that” and so I ended up with a denim skirt AND a jumper in plaid.
Then there was this weekend, in honor of my birthday I was allotted more yard sale cash. (Normally we do not spend so rampantly!) Yesterday I spent .35c of that, on a small ceramic box for me and some pebbles (counters the boys called them) for my sons buddy. Today we decided to go again, on the spur of the moment. At one I found a good selection of cook books and a book that looks like a fun read by… Barbara Johnson. A Christian lady, also known as the “Geranium lady” I think I heard her once on Focus on the Family. Then, I found not 1 but 2 denim skirt sets, for $7 total! These will work nicely for the $15 in Tees I got at the Christian book store (which had neither the ESV or the Amplified Bibles, but lots of touchy feely feel good books instead… ick)
So yes I am now fully outfitted for the next 2 years, the clothes can be taken in as I lose weight, which is high on my list now that my energy is returning. I can go nearly 3 weeks with mixing and matching!
Next week if I go I promise to focus on clothes for Beloved, he now needs more than I do!

Oh garage sales, yard sales, rummage sales, estate sales, flea markets and tag sales - no matter what you call them I love 'em. In fact in our family it's a badge of honor if someone points at a skirt you're wearing and you can say "garage sale 50 cents". My SIL is still queen of them though, got her new granddaughter all set up for Grandma's house with stroller, high chair, changing table, nursery linens, and clothes - all for less than $25.00 and most of the stuff still had the tags on it (I think the Tshirts were worn, but still new looking). The woman is just good at getting a bargain.

You did WONEDERMOUSLY~!!! How sweet of your hubby to bless you with the rest of what you needed for your wardrobe.

Do you have a Disabled American Veterans nearby? They sell all their clothing at .25 per item and on Saturday's you can fill an entire grocery cart up with whatever you want for $10. I've found some really good things for myself and my children after God's prompting me to stop there when I was in real need of clothing not long ago.

Yard sales are great, but my aging body doesn't wear the clothes the same as they appear on the hanger, so sometimes I wind up wasting money at them only to find the clothes don't fit when I get home & I wind up giving them away. The thrift store affords me a chance to try them on or to allow my kiddos to try them on, so I can make sure they fit.

Good for you. I also just love to find gently used clothing and other wonderful 'stuff' at garage sales, second hand stores, and outlet malls clearance racks. We hardly ever buy at the mall or other off the rack stores anymore.

Books and craft supplies, cooking and baking pans ( I make something and then give it to the hostess or reciever with a please keep message) used clothing is sometimes transformed into purses for the teen girls in the family or pillows and quilt tops. I find my bust canning jars at second hand stores for pennies on the dollar.

Happy for you! :)

I also like to shop at thrift and goodwill stores. I live in a small town, and there is a religious thrift store, where things are really cheap. We also have a religious thrift store where everything is free, I get most of my clothing , kitchen things etc. at the free store. I never make quilts, pot holders or any thing out of new material, I always reuse my clothing etc.

I am slowly changing my wardrobe over as things become available in our local Goodwill Store and Salvation Army Store. I used to shop at Value Village but am under the understanding they are a private for profit company. Does anyone know anything about this?
